Hendrik Kramer
Hendrik Kramer is sixth generation of a fishing family from Urk and the last fisherman in Amsterdam. Kramer is Amsterdam’s only commercial North Sea fisherman. Under the label ‘Wild ‘n Zilt’, he tries to make fishing more sustainable, using the first in a series of now four electrically powered fishing cutters in the Netherlands. Sustainable fish comes at a price, which cannot be passed on to the consumer because of the way the fisheries chain is organised.
Hendrik Kramer and his crew set to work as part of the Keeping it Local project and designed the model Metanoia after their fishing boat of the same name. The starting point was the traditional fisherman’s sweater motifs and patterns and their symbolic meanings, as described by Stella Ruhe in her books on Fisherman’s Sweaters.
