Dutch Design Week: Care & Repair

Designing a societal transition? That involves more than just coming up with a good idea. It also requires getting people, interests and systems to move forward together.

On Tuesday 20 October, Care & Repair will be taking part in the first public event organised by Ontwerpkracht & Transities, a programme run by CLICKNL, during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven.

The working session ‘Orchestrating transitions as a designer’ focuses on the changing role of the designer. What does the role of the designer as an orchestrator of societal transitions look like? Various orchestrators will share their perspectives in a moderated panel discussion. Participants are invited to contribute their thoughts on the role, the challenges and the value of orchestration as a design competence.

This theme is in line with the Care & Repair approach. As part of the project, we are investigating how design can help extend the lifespan of clothing. This requires not only new solutions for maintenance and repair, but also collaboration and cooperation between different parties in the textile supply chain.

For NewTexEco, the session ties in with the broader belief that design can play a key role in societal transitions. By bringing together different perspectives, forms of knowledge and stakeholders, design can contribute to new ways of working and to change at a systemic level.

Design Power & Transitions is a programme run by CLICKNL in which five research projects are investigating how design can contribute to societal transitions. During the public event, the projects will share their initial insights and findings with designers, researchers and other professionals.

In addition to the Care & Repair workshop, five other workshops will take place. There will also be a keynote speech by David Abbink, an inter- and transdisciplinary researcher and scientific director of FRAIM. At an exhibition, visitors can find out about the research projects within the programme.

Following the programme, NewTexEco is organising a networking drinks reception. This is a great opportunity to continue the discussions from the afternoon and to meet other researchers, designers and professionals from the network.
