Cabinet of Curiosities – Threads of Change
Dutch Design Week celebrates a quarter of a century of shaping the future. Under the theme ‘Past. Present. Possible.’ DDW reflects on its legacy, showcases today’s creative energy, and explores what design can become. A platform where ideas converge, possibilities open up, and the future is shaped together. Naturally, we will be there!
From October 18 to October 26, 11:00 – 18:00, our Cabinet of Curiosities – Threads of Change: Pushing Boundaries in Sustainable Textiles can be visited at the Klokgebouw.
This project is led by Troy Nachtigall. The new NewTexEco project Care & Repair is part of this installation.
Motivated to resist the harmful social and ecological impact of the global textile industry, five research groups from ArtEZ University of the Arts, Saxion University of Applied Sciences, and Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, together with more than 20 industry partners, are joining forces within the NewTexEco research community. Through a wide range of objects – from interactive software to tangible clothing, furniture, and even a washing machine for the Care & Repair project – the presentation Threads of Change: Pushing Boundaries in Sustainable Textiles showcases the consortium’s pioneering and innovative work.
“From yarns and fabrics to software and furniture – design shows us what is possible.”
The selection highlights different facets of NewTexEco. From yarns, fabrics, and dyes – such as the seaweed-dyed wool carpet by partner Zeefier; to production and design techniques, including digitally designed fashion by Knitwear Lab and software by The Fabricant, as well as projects focused on the care and repair of clothing. Personalification can also be a way to extend a product’s lifespan, as illustrated by custom-made furniture by ByBorre and sweaters knitted in symbolic patterns that carry meaning for the communities that designed them. With a focus on local production and new technologies, the projects show that more becomes possible when we collaborate.
