Natascha van der Velden
Natascha van der Velden is a researcher, consultant and lecturer in the field of sustainability in textiles and fashion. Ever since graduating from Delft University of Technology in 1994, she has been working in the field of sustainable textiles, which was still a pioneering subject within the sector at the time. After fifteen years’ experience in the textile industry, she returned to academia to undertake PhD research into the role of fashion designers in promoting sustainability.
Her expertise lies in life cycle assessments (LCAs), which provide insight into the environmental impact of materials, production processes and design choices. Drawing on this knowledge, she works on research projects, advises companies and teaches on sustainability and circular textile supply chains.
Among other things, Natascha focuses on demand-driven production, whereby clothing is only made when there is an actual demand for it. She is also exploring applications for recycled materials and innovative ways to reprocess textile waste. In her work, she emphasises the importance of transparency, local production and smarter manufacturing: “Do less, but do it better.”
With her keen insight into systemic change, circularity and interdisciplinary collaboration, she is helping to drive the transition towards a more sustainable fashion and textiles sector.
