Sustainable & Functional Textiles (Saxion)
Society is facing many complex issues. Sustainable and functional materials can help address these problems. The Sustainable & Functional Textiles (SFT) Research Group develops innovative concepts and products by way of applied research in collaboration with businesses, researchers and students.
Our focus includes recycling textile materials, processing sustainable fibres and textile analysis to improve quality and sustainability. We develop knitting technologies and integrate sensors and actuators into textiles for smart applications. With a user-centred design approach, we ensure that innovations meet real-world needs. We also drive improvements in textile processing to optimise efficiency and sustainability. Through these efforts, we are shaping a smarter, more sustainable future for textiles.

Knit2Last: from waste to innovation
In this KIEM project, we investigate the properties of products made with recycled fibres. For this purpose, wool fibres from both pre- and post-consumer clothing are reused via mechanical recycling, providing insight into the material’s processability and the performance of the knit. This allows accurate prediction of garment properties even before knitting. Recycling and processing […]

Digital Product Passport(s) for Circular Denim
Within NewTexEco, we are launching a new research project applying scalable digital product passports (DPPs) to the circular denim industry. DPPs provide insight into the origin, composition, processing and circular value of clothing. In collaboration with companies and knowledge institutions, we are exploring how this technology can be practically deployed within the denim supply chain, […]

Going Circular Going Cellulose
Going Circular Going Cellulose (GC)2 is a study by ArtEZ and Saxion into the possibilities of connecting the technical production of yarns and textiles from sustainable cellulose fibres to the wishes and requirements of textile designers. Sustainability and circular economy are key issues in the textile supply chain. Many companies want to make more sustainable […]
