Design (ArtEZ)
In the Design Professorship designers and researchers work together on new ways to understand and shape the future. This ranges from new materials and knowledge to new solutions for societal challenges. Through design and design research, we offer alternatives, develop new ideas and make change possible.
Design is more than a final product. It is a transformative way of thinking and doing that brings together art, technology, science and society. Through design research complex questions and collaborations are made clear and concrete.
By being critical, imagining possibilities and making things, design and design research reinforce one another. This leads to knowledge that you do not only read or hear, but also truly experience – knowledge that drives change.

Care & Repair
Over the past twenty years, global clothing production has more than doubled, while the lifespan of garments has been halved. This has led to growing mountains of waste and increased environmental pressure. Although concepts like design for longevity and recycling receive a lot of attention, there is often little focus on how clothes are actually […]

Bamboo Europe
Is it possible to set up a sustainable, transparent and local value chain for processing bamboo for interior design, construction and textiles? The Tactical Design lectureship investigates the potential of European-produced bamboo – from raw material to finished product. Bamboo is a promising renewable raw material that grows rapidly, has high CO2 uptake and excellent […]
From seagrass to sustainable textile application
In this project, European and especially Dutch seagrasses were investigated for the right properties to grow, harvest and process them – whether or not combined with other sustainable materials – into raw materials for textile applications in an ecologically and economically sustainable way. It also looked at whether historical knowledge of processing and applications of […]

Going Circular Going Cellulose
Going Circular Going Cellulose (GC)2 is a study by ArtEZ and Saxion into the possibilities of connecting the technical production of yarns and textiles from sustainable cellulose fibres to the wishes and requirements of textile designers. Sustainability and circular economy are key issues in the textile supply chain. Many companies want to make more sustainable […]
